New Release/News
08-03-2009
Hey everyone! hope the summer is treating you good!

Fantastic new Starving Weirdos release on the Blackest Rainbow label. it's an LP entitled 'B-P-M Series 1'. piano-bombs in the classic AVANT-WOW tradition. probably the most unique release coming from our camp yet. we recorded legendary BOP-PIANO player Darius Brotman and then used the recordings to create whole NEW compositions. we had one rule...ONLY the source recordings could be used to create the pieces...the wonderful graphic artist Mick Wiggins designed the cover and i have to say...not only is this release our most unique...it is the coolest cover we've had yet!!! fucking GREAT looking! thanks Mick!!! throw in the 180 gram vinyl and presto! one excellent release! look for copies soon at our store.

new mp3 up over at the sounds section 'Edge Of The Desert, Red Moon Rising'. new work, not quite finished but almost! wanted to give ya'll a taste of what we've been cookin'! also up is a cut from our 'Into An Energy' release, 'One White Candle, No Moon Night'.

europe trip is in the works! Staring Weirdos and the KILLER outfit Nudge...rollin' through the Netherlands/Germany in late Oct. and UK in early Nov...anyone out there know of any good places for us to play or help in that regard...shoot us an email!!!

SW CD 'Into An Energy' on Bo'Weavil Recordings!!!
05-12-2009
Out today!!!

hey ya'll

new Starving Weirdos CD on the most excellent Bo'Weavil Recordings imprint.

official release date is may 12th...today...so fucking stoked on this...can't wait for it to get out there!

we came back from europe so fucking charged up with ideas...we did our best to channel this energy/inspiration into these sessions...and i think(hopefully) it comes across on the album.

needless to say we are honored to be working with Bo'Weavil and just so godamn-excited about this release.

fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

copies for sale at our store!

here's a nice description of the work.

When Merrick McKinlay and Brian Pyle played me the master tapes for this CD, I can't say I was surprised. These eight new pieces bore all the hallmarks of Starving Weirdos' greatest work: the dizzying mixture of instrumental sounds, electronics, and field recordings, the pointillistic attention to sonic detail, the duo's post-production technique, which achieves something like the aural equivalent of deep-focus photography. Yet there was something... different about this particular disc, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. When I told 'em so, they just nodded and smiled in that aw-shucks manner of theirs. "That means we're doing something right," said Merrick. On Into an Energy the duo is joined by occasional collaborators Steve Lazar and Greg Devaney for the length of the record, and perhaps their chemistry together accounts for the elusive shift in focus heard on these cuts. But the group dynamic is a dodgy matter with these guys, unless you happen to catch one of their live performances (good luck with that!) You see, even though Starving Weirdos routinely break out the rain sticks, the horns, the hand drums, the gee-tars, or the cup-and-ball, at its core their art is a kind of deep-forest-ghetto-musique-concrète. You can never tell if what you're hearing is a real-time performance or a product of copious editing and overdubbing, whether those sounds emanated from tapes or from live instruments, whether it occurred in a tangible three-dimensional space or in a virtual sound-card reality. Most of the time, it's a combination of all these, and the results are profoundly transportive, disorienting. Yet while the Weirdos' song and album titles suggest an esoteric or spiritualist bent, their music is always reassuringly lucid, even earthy. Theirs is a mysticism grounded in the ordinary sounds of everyday life in their native Humboldt County, California, in the little ecstasies of common experience. At their best, Starving Weirdos achieve that, ahem, high romantic ideal: to make the familiar strange, and make the strange familiar, just as they do on this disc. --Acapulco Rodríguez New York, NY .

exclusive mp3s!!!!
08-28-2007
hey ya'll
cruise over to the wire website and dig on three exclusive mp3s we have up there.

here's a little extra info on the track Lust(a very different sounding SW track)

the title is actually "LUST 158" and was part of a
series i was doing- setting the words of fave authors
to music. this track was from LUST, words taken from
Elfiede Jelinek's book. all the words were taken from
particular pages in the book, hence the 158.

UPDATE!!!!
06-20-2007
well perhaps a bit of an overreaction to our wire review but hey it was a hack job and i needed to get that shit out of my system and i felt as though the work should be defended, totally over it. big thanks to all the wonderfull emails we've recieved from many of you in support of Shrine---TOTAL RADNESS!!!

okokok enough review bullshit let's get down to why we're here---NEWS!!!

well the weirdos just returned from our first mini-tour and i have to say it was stellar!!! had an excellent show with xela and tarentel at the hemlock in the city and then we headed on to L.A. for the bottled smoke fest. it was RULING!!! we had the full-on lincoln boombox shrine in effect along with a couple of out-of-town weirdos whom we never get to play with---it was one of our all-time favorite sets. so many great people and excellent music at bottled smoke we really had a great time---thank you so much to everyone who helped out with this trip and all the bands that played at bottled smoke---and a massive thanks to Jefre over at root strata---such a bro and largely responsible for turning many of you on to our sound.

here's the links to a couple of excerpts of our set.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2hwrzN0RRs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HFme9g6IJE&mode=related&search=

also wanted to correct a statement from the previous post. we don't have 10 more releases coming out this year, we have 10 more releases coming out in the next year (12 month span) and for the record we've only had 3 releases this first half of 2007 with one of them being a very limited one-sided LP(we have a couple left in our store!) but yeah lots of stuff coming up---we'll post an update soon with more info.

RAD!!!
wire review of shrine of the post hypnotic
05-11-2007
what an awesome review!!! nick cain really knows his shit!!!

after describing the last track he goes on to say "the remainder fecklessly overemphasis derivative noise-drone guitar" the only guitar on the entire album is the opening track about 10 minutes!!! and i'd be curious what it's derivative of. the other 25 minutes has no guitar. i guess it would sound like derivative noise drone-guitar if there was an actual guitar being noisily derivative!!! he gives the album such a passive listen he's not even sure what he's listening to so he resorts to some flippant, bullshit description---well done!!!

he continues with his description of the title track "field recordings of waves lapping on a shore and seagulls are barely distinguishable from Ambient cliche" this guy's ears are fucked, such a lazy listen. waves lapping on a shore and seagulls are where we live!!! i guess that's ambient cliche when used in a composition. no mention at all of it's compositional elements or it's construction or the other sounds involved. as if you hear sounds like this used in this manner all the time!!! please show me an example!!! so lazy.

if your going to critique something why not put in the time to give an honest critique. then you could rip the album to shreds, totally destroy it...instead of this bullshit.

to be fair i can totally picture it. it's late at night your hella stoned i'm talking hel-la you got a stack of cds in front of you waiting to be listened to your tired it's been a long day you pop in the weirdos shrine album and your like "oh fuck not this bullshit and this lame fucking band name no way!!!" but then the last track starts and your all settled in and your like "this shit's not tooooo bad, it's actually pretty good fuck it."

well get bummed!!! we got 10 more releases coming out this year for you to wipe your ass with.
